LAHORE: A major step forward in Pakistan's railway freight transportation has been achieved with the assembly of 115 flat wagons in Complete Knocked Down (CKD) form at a factory in Lahore.
These wagons, which are set to be deployed in April, are part of a larger order of 620 units being co-produced by Pakistan Railways in collaboration with the Chinese company, Baotou Beifang Chuangye Co, Ltd. According to Philippe Mi, the Chinese project director for the 820 High-Capacity Wagon (HCW) project, once all 620 freight wagons are operational, they will significantly increase Pakistan's railway freight capacity, effectively doubling its current capabilities.
Beifang Chuangye secured the contract in 2021 to supply a total of 820 high-capacity freight wagons, which include open-top, flat, and covered wagons, as well as cabooses. By 2022, the company had successfully delivered and integrated 200 wagons into Pakistan's railway system. In 2024, 115 open-top wagons were assembled at the Risalpur factory in Semi Knocked Down (SKD) form and deployed to serve routes between Karachi Port and various inland destinations. This expansion has helped alleviate storage pressures at Karachi Port while increasing freight capacity, supporting the nation's logistics infrastructure. Aamir Baloch, CEO of Pakistan Railways, noted that this initiative was crucial for reducing reliance on imports and promoting local industry, contributing to greater economic self-sufficiency and the modernization of Pakistan's freight transportation network. The design of the wagons has been standardized to ensure compatibility and improve operational efficiency. Ishaq Butt, the Pakistani project director for the 820HCW project, emphasized that the uniformity of the wagons' design is integral to streamlining operations and reducing long-term maintenance costs, making it a crucial component of Pakistan's national infrastructure development strategy. The project has not only contributed to improving transportation capacity but has also created approximately 450 direct jobs, many of which have been filled by young technicians who have received specialized training. Butt highlighted that this initiative has played a significant role in enhancing the skills of local workers, thus boosting Pakistan Railways' manufacturing capabilities. "This local production project has provided invaluable training to many young technicians and skilled workers, ensuring the sustainability of our workforce for the future," he added.Beifang Chuangye has been instrumental in providing support throughout the project, including personnel training, equipment upgrades, and improvements in inventory management and quality control processes. These efforts have resulted in enhanced capabilities at the assembly lines in Lahore and Risalpur, helping to meet the high standards required for the project. The successful collaboration between Pakistan Railways and Beifang Chuangye is a clear example of how international partnerships can contribute to the growth and modernization of Pakistan's transportation infrastructure, particularly in the freight sector. With the deployment of these high-capacity wagons, Pakistan is well on its way to expanding its rail freight capacity and enhancing the overall efficiency of its logistics network.
