ISLAMABAD: The Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) in Pakistan is set to convene and is considering the discontinuation of free electricity units for officers of Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and Generation Companies (GENCOs).

The proposal suggests replacing the free electricity units with a utility allowance for officers in grades 17 to 22 within the power division.

  • Grade 17 officers in DISCOs may receive a monthly utility allowance of Rs15,858 instead of the current 450 free units.
  • Officers in DISCOs from grades 18 to 21 could receive monthly utility allowances of Rs21,996, Rs37,594, Rs46,922, and Rs55,536, respectively.
  • Grade 17 officers in GENCOs might be granted a monthly utility allowance of Rs24,570.
  • Officers in GENCOs from grades 18 to 21 may receive monthly utility allowances of Rs26,460, Rs42,720, Rs46,992, and Rs55,536, respectively.

Previously, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Employees Union protested in Lahore, advocating for the continuation of free power facilities for WAPDA employees. The union's president threatened a strong reaction if the provision of free electricity to employees were to be revoked.
