ISLAMABAD: In a significant diplomatic development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized Pakistan's commitment to enhancing trade, economic, energy, connectivity, and security ties with Russia during a meeting with Alexei Overchuk, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.
This encounter took place in Islamabad, where Sharif expressed optimism about the forthcoming SCO summit, looking forward to discussions with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.The Prime Minister highlighted that strengthening relations with Russia is a critical component of Pakistan’s foreign policy. "We consider it an important priority," he stated, underlining the mutual benefits that can arise from deepened collaboration between the two nations. During the meeting, Overchuk expressed gratitude for the warm welcome he received and reaffirmed Russia's commitment to fostering closer relations with Pakistan. He described the existing Pakistan-Russia relationship as constructive and beneficial for both sides, stressing the importance of maintaining regular communication to enhance this partnership.
A notable outcome of this meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries. This agreement signifies a shared understanding and a mutual desire to strengthen cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, energy, information technology, agriculture, science and technology, and education. Additionally, Overchuk announced Russia's support for Pakistan's inclusion in the BRICS group, a move that could significantly enhance Pakistan's international standing and economic opportunities.
