Pakistan gears up for Int’l Conference in Geneva

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will co-host along with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan in Geneva on January 9, 2023. 

 Conference will serve as platform to marshal international support for people and government of Pakistan to build back better in resilient manner after recent devastating floods, as country transitions from rescue-and-relief phase towards monumental task of recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

 Pakistan will present Resilient Recovery, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Framework (4RF) at Conference and seek international support and long-term partnerships for its implementation. 4RF document outlines prioritised and sequential Plan, defined at Federal and Provincial levels and includes financial mechanism and institutional arrangements for its execution in an open, transparent and collaborative manner. Official launch of 4RF document and partner support announcements will be released.Prime Minister and UN Secretary General will also hold joint press stakeout. At Conference, Prime Minister will outline Pakistan’s vision for rehabilitating affected population and reconstructing damaged infrastructure in resilient manner, with support of development partners and country’s transition towards more dynamic and sustainable economic development model.  Ministers will elaborate on 4RF document and also present Pakistan’s long-term plan for building climate resilience and adaptation. Perspectives of four provinces will be articulated by their representatives. Heads of state and government, ministers and high-level representatives from several countries and international financial institutions, foundations and funds as well as from international development organisations, private sector, civil society and INGOs will participate in Conference.

Meanwhile Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Quaid Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and two more family members departed for Geneva-Switzerland from London, citing sources. Sources told Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz will stay in Geneva for one week where he will also meet his doctor. Two more family members are also accompanying Nawaz Sharif and Maryam on Geneva tour. Sharif is also expected to hold ‘some private meetings’ in Geneva, sources added. In November, PML-N supremo along with other family members had paid visit to Europe from London from November 21 to 30. It was Sharif’s first international trip after three years of stay in London.
