ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have signed multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to further enhance cooperation in various sectors, including renewable energy, construction, and fertiliser.
The MoUs were signed during a high-level ceremony held on Thursday, with key officials from both nations in attendance. One significant MoU was between Pakistan's Thatta Cement Company and China's Qing Gong Construction Group. This agreement will lead to the establishment of a cement production line in Pakistan, aimed at increasing the cement production capacity by 5,000 tonnes per day. The move is expected to contribute positively to Pakistan's construction and infrastructure sectors by boosting local cement production. Another MoU was signed between Sindh's Energy Department and China's Ming Yang Renewable Energy Company. This agreement outlines cooperation on various renewable energy projects in Pakistan.
The collaboration is expected to help Pakistan diversify its energy mix and transition towards more sustainable energy sources. China has long been a key partner in helping Pakistan advance its renewable energy sector. Additionally, the Government of Sindh entered into an agreement with a Chinese company for a coal gasification and urea production plant project. This project aims to enhance Pakistan's fertiliser production capacity while promoting the use of alternative energy sources. The MoU signing ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and other senior provincial ministers. The signing event also marked the culmination of President Zardari's official five-day visit to China, aimed at further strengthening the long-standing bilateral relationship between the two nations.
On Wednesday, President Zardari held a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both leaders discussed the continued positive trajectory of the bilateral relationship. They also explored regional and international issues of mutual interest and opportunities for further expanding the scope of cooperation, particularly in areas such as science and technology, media, clean energy, and socio-economic development. During the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the unique and time-tested strategic partnership between Pakistan and China. The two countries pledged to continue supporting each other on key issues of core interest, further solidifying their alliance.
This visit and the signing of MoUs are seen as part of ongoing efforts to enhance Pakistan-China cooperation, especially in key sectors critical to Pakistan's economic development. The partnership between the two nations continues to grow stronger, with both sides optimistic about the potential for future collaboration.
