Over 33m affected due to rains, flash floods in Pakistan: Shazia Marri

KARACHI: Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety and BISP Chairperson Shazia Atta Marri said that over 33 million people have been affected owing to rains and flash floods in Pakistan.
Attending meeting of 26th Socialist International Congress held at Madrid, Spain according to communiqué here she expressed solidarity with women and children affected by wars and conflicts globally and highlighted catastrophic impact of climate change in Pakistan in-detail. Shazia Marri said, “We are expressing solidarity with women and children of Palestine, Kashmir and all around world where they are being tortured and harassed as results of wars and conflicts.” She said climate change wreaked havoc on Pakistan this summer and affected more than 33 million people, including 0.65 million pregnant women and about 4 million children. She said climate change was probably greatest threat being faced by humanity today.
“A few years back, many around world, including Socialist International members were debating on issue of climate change, as debate continues, climate-related disasters kept wreaking havoc,” she added. Shazia Marri said by taking example of recent floods in Pakistan, it was important to understand that climate change was not just an environmental issue, but threat to health, livelihood, agriculture, peace and security and overall economy of world. She said climate change was threat beyond imagination of common man, which had endangered future of our planet.
