New York Magazine and its prominent political reporter, Olivia Nuzzi, have mutually decided to part ways following reports of her personal digital relationship with a source while covering the 2024 campaign.
The announcement was made on Monday, indicating that an internal review and an investigation by an external law firm found no issues with Nuzzi’s accuracy or impartiality. In a statement posted on its website, the magazine expressed its appreciation for Nuzzi’s nearly eight years of service as its Washington correspondent, describing her as a “uniquely talented writer.”
They wished her well in her future endeavors. The situation gained attention last month when the newsletter Status broke the story, with a foreign news agency also citing unnamed sources that identified Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the individual involved with Nuzzi. While she has not confirmed this, Kennedy stated he had only met her once. David Haskell, editor in chief of New York Magazine, informed staff that Nuzzi revealed the relationship began last December, shortly after her profile on Kennedy was published. Haskell noted that the relationship reportedly ended in August.
Nuzzi acknowledged in a statement to Status that her communication with the former subject became personal earlier this year, asserting that she did not directly report on Kennedy during that time. “The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict,” she stated, expressing regret for not disclosing it sooner and apologizing to those she disappointed, especially her colleagues at New York. The magazine emphasized that had they been aware of the relationship, Nuzzi would not have been permitted to cover the presidential campaign.
