ISLAMABAD: Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar asserted that no institution has authority to rewrite Constitution. Speaking at meeting of National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, chaired by Rana Aradat Sharif, he expressed strong support for proposed amendments to Elections Act 2017.
“We cannot allow any institution to rewrite Constitution. Courts interpret law, but they do not have authority to change it,” said Tarar. He highlighted requirement for elected members to join political party within three days and noted that once party is joined, it becomes irrevocable. In contrast, members supported by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf opposed bill. Shahida Akhtar Ali emphasised need to work for supremacy of Constitution and law. “We take oaths to legislate for public good. It would have been better to introduce legislation against IPPs. Election Commission has always been caught in middle,” she remarked. Committee’s discussions reflected concerns over amendments’ potential consequences, calling for thorough examination and government transparency in legislative changes.
