NEPRA Chairman, members get six-digit salaries

KARACHI: Aggregate amounts in financial statement in respect of remuneration including benefits applicable to chairman and four members of NEPRA were stated to be Rs 127,681 and Rs 74,489 per month respectively in year 2019. But soon after taking over by PTI regime, their remunerations in 2020 amazingly sky-rocketed to Rs 5.793 million per annum remuneration and Rs 4.178 million towards other allowances by chairman NEPRA making a total of Rs 9.972 million or Rs 0.831 million per month.

Salaries and allowances paid by National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to its chairman and four provincial members had soared by up to 551 percent in fiscal year ended June 30, 2020, compared to what they received in preceding year.

Four members of NEPRA started allocation of Rs 23.205 million towards managerial remuneration plus Rs 16.315 million for other allowances making a total of Rs 39.521 million thus getting Rs 0.823 million per each every month.

Total number of NEPRA employees was declared as 316 while in year 2020 it was escalated to 350. Government loans granted before year 2019 were estimated at Rs 48.439 million. During year Rs 139.796 million more loans were issued and Rs 83.135 million was recovered during year leaving a balance of Rs 105.101 million for next year.

In 2020 Rs 179.968 million loans were issued to employees and Rs 86.375 million were recovered leaving a total of Rs 198.694 in balance. Out of this Rs 51.24 million were still outstanding after end of year. According to informed sources, these amounts were meant for salary advances and loans were given to employees for purchase of vehicles i.e. car/motorbike, etc. these are interest-free and given for a period of more than one year.
