KARACHI: Supreme Court’s life-time disqualification verdict is widely praised by top brass of political leaders. The verdict have open the doors for PML-N supremo and IPP Chief Jahangir Tareen to contest General Elections.
PPP senior leader Qamar Zaman Kaira termed top court’s verdict as good step to move to correct its record. He said Parliament enacted law that capped disqualification at maximum of five years under Article 62(1)(f) however, it was challenged in court.
Kaira urged to end tradition of challenging every decision of Parliament in courts. There’s also perception that apex court is correcting wrongs committed in past and this step should be supported, he added.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz lauded Supreme Court’s decision to nullify lifetime disqualification of lawmakers, considering it pivotal step towards restoring constitutional sanity.
According to Marriyum Aurangzeb, PML-N Central Secretary Information, this ruling vindicates party supremo Nawaz Sharif and reinstates his honour. Aurangzeb condemned short-lived vengeful actions of former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar. Marriyum emphasised that Supreme Court’s decision reaffirms supremacy of Constitution and criticised provision of lifetime disqualification.
Meanwhile, Central Secretary Information of Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan hailed Supreme Court’s landmark decision to strike down lifelong disqualification of political leaders as an important victory for democracy. She expressed her party’s strong support for ruling, emphasising its potential to restore fairness and inclusivity to political landscape.
The SC, on January 5, reserved its decision in the matter related to the re-examining of the lifetime disqualification of lawmakers under Article 62 (1) (f) of the Constitution with Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa favouring the “original Constitution”, lamenting "encroachments" made into the country's bill of rights over the years.
