KARACHI: Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori and Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) convener Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui held one-on-one meeting at Governor’s House. Kamran Tessori and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui discussed political situation, digital census and progress on agreement with ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party. Sources told they also exchanged views on notification for increasing 53 union councils (UCs).
Siddiqui praised Tessori’s efforts for notification regarding UCs. Governor also held two separate meetings with Local Government (LG) Minister for removing legal complications and issuance of notification.
Siddiqui said that MQM-P’s demand was met and ruling PPP should also implement other provisions of agreement. KMS said that he held meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and expressed reservations regarding digital census.
Governor said that he will play his role for development of province and metropolis. He vowed to hold talks with federal government and premier regarding census issue. Earlier in day, Sindh government accepted demand of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan, notifying an increase in number of Union Committees in Karachi Division.
According to notification issued by Local Government Department, government included 53 more Union Committees in Karachi Division, taking total number of UCs from 246 to 299. “Notification will apply prospectively for future Local Government elections,” it added.
Sources told that increase in number of committees will not affect results of recently-held LG elections. Sources claimed that Mayor Karachi will be elected on basis of 246 Union Committees.
