KARACHI: Possibility of MQM’s various factions coming together has increased after party’s Rabita Committee expressed its support for former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal-led Pak Sarzameen Party and Dr Farooq Sattar’s decision to rejoin party. Sindh Governor’s House is now focal point of political activities. Governor Kamran Tessori of MQM-P is playing crucial role in this situation. On behalf of coordination committee, MQM-P Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui now officially has power to make decisions.

Sources said all of members of party’s coordination committee received orders to report to Governor’s House. More than 30 members of committee, including Siddiqui, Waseem Akhtar, Khawaja Izharul Hassan and Qadir Khanzada participated in huddle in presence of Governor.

During 3.5-hour meeting, sources said all members of coordination committee were asked for their thoughts on PSP as well as Sattar rejoining party. All committee members present there described it as wise move and welcomed it.Members’ position was that anyone who wished to join MQM should be accepted, per party’s constitution and laws. After discussion, coordination committee unanimously decided to entrust Siddiqui with making decision to unite MQM, PSP and Sattar. According to sources, few coordination committee members including Federal Minister Aminul Haque, Senior Deputy Convener Aamir Khan and Iqbal Muqaddam were not present at meeting and their opinions were sought over phone. The sources added that these members also supported joint decision.

Before meeting, Tessori had already contacted Sattar and PSP’s Kamal and Anis KaimKhani. At full quorum meeting to unify factions, MQM formally took all members of coordination committee into confidence for first time a development that was being hailed as significant breakthrough.

A joint news conference will likely be held at Governor’s House after several issues are settled to bring all factions together, including announcements about Sattar and PSP’s Kamal, KaimKhani as well as their colleagues joining MQM. Sources indicated that situation might still need another 10 to 15 days to be resolved.

MQM sources said throughout meeting at Governor’s House, each member’s opinion was solicited and those who were not there, were also approached for reaching consensus. Expressing confidence in Siddiqui’s leadership, MQM sources said there could be no questions raised over reputation of party’s convener.
