Minister Sabzwari lauds role of maritime sector in unleashing potential of blue economy

KARACHI: “Pakistan Single Window is promising development that would be game changer for Maritime Industry in Pakistan. It has potential to streamline processes, reduce corruption and enhance transparency.

Faisal Sabzwari Minister of Maritime Affairs in his message at National Seminar on Good Governance, Best Practices and Integrity Measures in Maritime Industry of Pakistan said, “All stakeholders need to join hands to help government build legal environment to level of international standards and unleash potential of growth that can take Pakistan’s blue economy into new era in region.”

Muhammad Rajpar Vice Chairman Karachi Port Trust Member Board of Directors of Port Bin Qasim representing Minister, appreciated efforts of Global Compact Network Pakistan (GCNP) and Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) in bringing stakeholders together for collective action to promote good governance by combating corruption in Maritime industry.

Seminar was organised to launch Collective Action against corrupt practices in maritime industry and was attended by number of stakeholders including representatives from shipping companies, shipping agents, Customs agents, freight forwarding association and other sectoral bodies and associations. Majyd Aziz President GCNP in appreciated presence of stakeholders that reflected their commitment to participate in drive for collective action to improve performance of blue economy in country.

Fasihul Karim Siddiqi Executive Director GCNP explained objectives of seminar and specially thanked Jonas Erlandsen, senior Lead, South Asia MACN, Mathias Bak, Associate MACN and Martin Zapata, Academic Programmes senior officer, International Anti-Corruption Academy for their participation as this would benefit stakeholders by their knowledge and experience in combating menace of corruption through best practices in South Asia.

Naveed Abbas Memon Chief Domain Officer Pakistan Single Window (made comprehensive presentation on initiatives taken by Pakistan Single Window in improving good governance in Maritime sector.

Mayhar Mustafa Kazi Partner RIAA Barker Gillette presented lively and informative paper on legal reforms for improving good governance in maritime industry and issues of shortage claims.

Jonas Erlandsen introduced MACN and highlighted their initiative and experience in combating corruption in industry while Mathias Bak made presentation on global best maritime practices.

Commander Idrees Assistant Professor Maritime Department Bahria University Karachi made presentation on preparing educated youth for promotion of good governance in maritime sector.

Panel of experts discussed various initiatives and challenges in good governance and best practices in maritime sector. Muhammad Akram, Shah Zaman, Wajid Ali, appreciated initiatives taken by MACN and GCNP for playing positive role in addressing issues of good governance.

Syed Tanvir Ahmed said that their exhaustive interaction with stakeholders through 28 meetings held within period of one week has created immense awareness among stakeholders about issues and challenges in way of addressing menace of corruption in maritime sector.
