ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Minister for National Food Security and Research Dr Kausar Abdulla Malik underscored need for unified supply chain coupled with a strong regulatory framework to discourage artificial hikes in prices of food items in country.
In meeting of Agriculture Policy Institute he was briefed by Director General Abdul Karimon on function of Institute and its ongoing projects, said press release.
Minister was informed that API analysed impact of important agricultural policies on groups such as consumers, processors and exporters and advises on policy adjustments needed for greater efficiency and equity in country.
Dr Kausar Malik said that Agriculture Policy Institute should work on unified comprehensive plan for food supply chain in consultation with provinces which would pave way for control of artificial hike in food prices.
Increase in food prices is result of mismatch in demand and supply or hoarding due to weak regulatory frameworks, he said adding that API should come forward with proposal to activate Food Security Advisory Council to serve as bridge between federation and provinces on impact of important agricultural policies with special focus on food prices.
Existing market committees in country need to be reassessed with cooperation of provinces to identify major issues and gaps at grassroots level.
