While The Legend of Maula Jatt was all about rivalry between Natts and Jatts, it wasn’t just strong display of masculinity that made film blockbuster but also its modern take on empowered femininity that led Bilal Lashari directorial to be chart-buster.
Mahira Khan who plays Mukkho Natt in film spoke to Variety about how her character was different from one in original 1979 Younis Malik’s Maula Jatt. “Biggest thing that Mukkho had was that she was just such an empowered woman, she loved fearlessly, her moral compass was so intact, she had integrity and she was fierce also,” she exclaimed with pride. “That was very big thing that women in today’s Maula Jatt are much empowered.”
Raees actress revealed that prior to film’s release a lot of fans and media questioned her whether women in film will follow same regressive route that 1970s cult classic did. “A lot of people asked me prior to release ‘Are we going to see same 1970s representation of women? I said, no, you’re going to see Bilal Lashari’s representation of women.’ I’m glad to have been part of it.”–Agencies
