Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmad named NAB boss

ISLAMABAD: Government appointed Lieutenant General (retd) Nazir Ahmad as National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) Chairman for three-year term. In notification, Ministry of Law and Justice said that appointment had been made by government after consensus between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and leader of opposition in National Assembly Raja Riaz.
Post of NAB Chairman became vacant on February 15 after acceptance of resignation tendered by Aftab Sultan, notification said. After “Detailed deliberations”, both sides agreed on appointment of Lt Gen (retd) Ahmad. NAB Chairman according to Ministry shall hold office for “Non-extendable term of three years” and will not be eligible for subsequent appointment.
It is also not possible to remove Chairman from office except on grounds and in manner as provided in Article 209 of Constitution, notification added. Earlier in move welcomed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Sultan tendered his resignation as NAB Chairman, after reportedly refusing to “Toe line”.
He had been appointed as head of anti-graft body on July 21, 2022, for three years by Pakistan Democratic Movement government after Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal’s tenure ended last year.
