Law Minister hints at ‘extending’ caretaker setup

ISLAMABAD: Amid evolving political situation of country, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has hinted at extending tenure of caretaker set-up.
In an exclusive conversation with private TV channel, he said that extension in term of caretaker government depends on circumstances as Constitution allows such extensions. Elections were postponed due to floods in 1988 and in 2017, Election Commission of Pakistan changed date of polls due to martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto. He said that electoral watchdog would announce date of elections, keeping in mind Constitution and Election Act.
Minister said that appointment of caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi was unanimous. Concerning Fawad Chaudhary’s arrest, he stated that case against PTI leader was filed at request of Election Commission Secretary and that courts are independent and will rule on matter.
