Lahore students stage anti-harassment rally against alleged campus rape

Lahore: Progressive Students Collective held an anti-harassment rally, day after 28 students were injured in clashes with college’s security team and then with police in Lahore during protest against alleged on-campus rape of girl. Enraged by alleged incident, students mobilised on social media and staged protests outside different colleges in city.
On Tuesday, PSC held rally from Government College University to Punjab Assembly. In statement on X, group had called demonstrators to join protest. Meanwhile. students from other cities of Punjab also joined protests with some of them vandalising college building on Bosan Road in Multan after which police arrested dozens of students and baton charged them. Motorcycle rally was taken out by students in Jahanian, while in Zafarwal, students blocked traffic by setting tires on fire, demanding justice and transparent investigation into matter. Rally demanded probe into yesterday’s violence on students, Punjab College rape case and incidents of harassment at Lahore Women’s College. They called for formation of committee comprising independent human rights organisations, student representatives and judges. They demanded that an anti-harassment committee be formed on various campuses and representation of students, especially one female student, should be ensured. Rally’s third demand was that an awareness campaign be started on laws and procedures related to harassment, with awareness guidelines included in curriculum, On Sunday, security guard was arrested after news related to incident went viral on social media.
According to police statement, suspect had been arrested and an investigation was underway. Punjab government also formed “High-powered” committee to probe incident. Separately, Punjab police, in post on X, said that if anyone had “Any information regarding alleged rape” in Lahore, they should “Immediately inform authorities via by either calling 15 or through Women Safety App. “Name of whistleblower will be kept confidential,” police said.
