ISLAMABAD: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali announced May 28 as date for elections in province following meeting with Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and President Dr Arif Alvi.
Governor held meetings with ECP officials earlier and was later called by President Dr Arif Alvi to discuss matters related to general elections for KP Assembly. KP Assembly was dissolved in mid-January and caretaker setup was put in place to hold elections. However, date was not finalised for elections despite Supreme Court’s orders. During meeting, President advised announcing date for polls in KP Assembly after consultations with ECP to avoid any complications as almost period of two weeks had already passed by. Emphasising need for upholding Constitution and holding general elections within given time period, President Alvi directed Governor Ali to implement top court’s order in letter and spirit where it is directed. Supreme Court in split verdict ruled on March 1 that elections for KP and Punjab assemblies should be held within 90 days.
