KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has proposed an increase in municipal charges, with the revised rates to be presented in the upcoming city council session, officials said yesterday.

According to KMC officials, the proposed hike is aimed at improving urban services and will be structured according to electricity consumption levels. Citizens consuming up to 50 units of electricity per month will be exempt from the municipal charges.

Under the proposal, those consuming between 51 and 200 units will pay Rs50, up from Rs20. Consumers using 201 to 300 units would see their charges rise from Rs50 to Rs100. Households using 301 to 400 units would pay Rs200, an increase of Rs100, while those in the 401 to 500 unit bracket would pay Rs225, up by Rs100. For higher consumption brackets, charges would rise further.

Consumers using 501 to 600 units would pay Rs275 (up by Rs125), while 601 to 700 unit users would be charged Rs300 (up by Rs125). Those consuming more than 700 units could face a maximum charge of Rs750, following an increase of Rs450.

In addition to household rates, the proposal includes fixed monthly municipal charges of Rs600 for general services, Rs550 for commercial users, and Rs750 for industrial consumers. Officials stated that the additional revenue will be spent exclusively on enhancing civic amenities.

"The funds collected from these charges will be reinvested into improving municipal facilities for citizens," a KMC representative said.
