LAHORE: Senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Syed Khursheed Ahmad Shah stated on Friday that his party would pursue an independent path without forming any alliances.
Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Shah emphasized that any delay in elections would have severe consequences for the country, expressing concerns about potential manipulation of the electoral process. He questioned the fairness of the electoral landscape when members of a political party are in the government.
Shah asserted that the prime minister's residence was still accessible to them, just as it was when they were in power. He warned against any selection process, emphasizing that it would be counterproductive. The PPP, he stated, avoids engaging in politics based on unfounded allegations and prayed for timely and democratic elections in the country.
Referring to the situation of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Shah suggested that if Nawaz Sharif were to go to jail immediately upon his return to Pakistan, it could elevate his political stature. He remarked that obtaining bail from the court had damaged Nawaz Sharif's image.
Highlighting the PPP's roots in Punjab, Shah reiterated their accountability to the people, leaving it to the citizens of Pakistan to respond to the unfolding events.
As the former opposition leader, Shah urged the caretaker government to speak out in support of the people of Gaza.
