A Karachi resident has taken legal action against K-Electric for receiving an excessively high electricity bill. Abdul Khaliq, a Shah Rasool Colony resident in Clifton, Karachi, has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) challenging K-Electric for issuing him three electricity bills totaling Rs 598,000.
The petitioner informed the court that he was accused of power theft without prior notice. When the court inquired about his electricity consumption, the petitioner's lawyer stated that he is a star customer of K-Electric.
In response, the court instructed the customer to pay the current bill and postponed the hearing for outstanding dues until October 12.
In another blow to already burdened electricity consumers, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a tariff increase of Rs1.71 per unit. This increase in power tariff, authorized under fuel adjustment charges (FAC) for August, will be reflected in October bills. However, Lifeline and K-Electric customers will not be affected by this rate hike.
Additionally, on October 3, NEPRA approved a per-unit electricity price increase of Rs 3.28 as part of the quarterly adjustment.
