Amman: Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has urged United Nations Security Council to adopt draft resolution calling for an “Immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, tabled. In post on X, Safadi said resolution “Must be adopted if only to say this atrocity is unacceptable”.
Meanwhile, United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres has commended Jordan for its “Support in de-escalation, including in East Jerusalem”. In post on X, UN’s Jordan office quoted Guterres as saying, “Hearts are heavy in region and indeed around world from unprecedented and ongoing devastation in Gaza.”
UN Chief addressed joint press conference with Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.
Antonio Guterres has defended UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, describing it as “Lifeline of hope and dignity”, AFP reported.
“We must strive to keep one-of-a-kind services that UNRWA provides flowing because that keeps hope flowing,” Guterres said during his visit to camp. Meanwhile, food and water shortages have deepened suffering, especially in northern Gaza where residents, mostly women and children were waiting in line to fill up jerrycans and buckets in Jabalia, AFP reported.
“We don’t even have food to give us energy to go to collect water-let alone innocent children, women and elderly,” said one man, Bassam Mohammed al-Haou.
Another local man, Falah Saed, said, “We are suffering lot from water shortages because all pipes and pumps have stopped working since beginning of war”. More than 50 airstrikes rained down on Gaza Strip, said Gaza government press office.
