Education in reality fosters resilience and adaptability in students and the quality education undoubtedly promotes a culture of respect and empathy.
It is indeed a moment of great bliss for Pakistan that a Pakistani man Jafar Mirza, a distinguished leader in education and community service, has made significant contributions to the Cambridge region since his migration from Karachi in 1973.
Jafar Mirza, a remarkable figure in the field of education, began his transformative journey in 1973 when he migrated from Karachi to London. In 1994, he settled in Cambridge, where his commitment to education and community service left an indelible mark.
"England doesn’t let go of one who goes there that easily," Mirza reflects, a sentiment underscoring his enduring dedication to his adopted home.
In exclusive interview with ‘Daily National Courier’ Mirza revealed that he is the first Asian and Muslim who became the Chairman of the Cambridge Regional College Board of Governors in 2001, and under his leadership, the college saw innovative programs and improvisation in diversified areas.
Recalling back some of his magnanimous contributions in the education sector, Jafar Mirza became the Chairman of the Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum, an umbrella organization representing 23 diverse ethnic groups in 1997.
His leadership skills were soon recognized, leading to his election as a governor of the Cambridge Regional College in 1999. Just two years later, he made history as the first Asian and Muslim Chairman of the Board of Governors, a role he held for six impactful years. During Mirza's tenure community engagement initiatives enriched the educational landscape.
Moreover, it is pertinent to mention here that in 2004, the Cambridge Regional College named its new arts building after him ‘Jafar Mirza Building’, a testament to his significant contributions to education and community development.
Subsequently, the time arrived when Mirza added another feather in his cap, his tireless efforts in fundraising and advocacy for educational initiatives garnered him the prestigious Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2006, awarded by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her 80th birthday celebrations.
That same year, he received the Role Model Award for his contributions to education, joining the ranks of influential figures like Allama Iqbal.
Mirza also told this scribe that his influence extended beyond the college as he connected with notable figures, including Nobel laureates and educational leaders.
His interactions led to a pivotal role at Anglia Ruskin University, where he was elected to the Board of Governors in 2003. His dedication and accessibility made him a respected voice in educational governance, culminating in a position on the government’s advisory board for further education.
As of 2023, Mirza continues to inspire as the Chairman of the University of the Third Age and Director of the East of England Faith Council.
It could be rightly said that Jafar Mirza is a visionary advocate for quality education and diversity. His journey from a student in London to a prominent leader in Cambridge exemplifies the power of dedication, community engagement, and educational advocacy.
He is indeed a living role model for minority communities, embodying the spirit of inclusivity and excellence in education.
