ISLAMABAD: International Women’s Day is being celebrated across world including Pakistan to recognise social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Theme of this year’s day is DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality. Number of functions and events will be organised in connection with day.

President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasised need to empower women for development of society.  In their separate messages on Day, they called for increasing participation of women in all walks of life.

President Dr Arif said Pakistan needs to increase women’s access to technology and digital literacy programs, especially in far-flung areas.

He said besides providing access to internet services, laptops and other digital technologies, we should encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Dr Arif said it is essential to provide resources and support to women entrepreneurs and business owners to make them financially independent.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said International Women’s Day is day to recognise key role of women in society and their contribution to evolution of human civilisation. He said history witnesses that development of human society is not possible without constructive role of women. He said our religion Islam granted equal rights to women 14 hundred years ago.

He stressed that entire society had to work together to ensure more empowerment, protection and fair rights for women.

Minister for Climate Change Senator Sherry Rehman said purpose of observing International Women’s Day is to encourage women, recognise their rights and spread awareness among people regarding equal status of women.

In her message she said forty nine percent of Pakistan’s population consists of women and they are backbone of our family system, society, country and economy.
