Iqra University, one of Pakistan’s well-known institutions, has come under fire for its recent Fashion Odyssey 2024 event.
Organized by the university in collaboration with AIFD, the grand fashion show showcased the creative work of emerging young designers from Iqra University. The event featured top models and was attended by several prominent fashion personalities, adding to its glamour.
However, the boldness of the fashion showcased at the event has sparked controversy. A video from the fashion show, circulating widely on social media, highlights the Western-inspired outfits presented by the models. Many social media users have criticized the university for promoting what they perceive as inappropriate fashion choices.
Some have pointed out that the bold, revealing designs contradict the values associated with the university’s name, which is derived from the first word revealed by Allah to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
One comment on social media read, “Iqra is the first word sent by Allah, and they are showcasing vulgarity under that name.”
The backlash has focused on the belief that the event promoted Western fashion trends that many consider culturally inappropriate or “vulgar” in the context of Pakistani values.
Critics argue that the youth today are misguided in following Western culture, and some feel the university’s attempt to imitate Western fashion lacked the creativity and finesse necessary to make it a true representation of Pakistani design.
The controversy has sparked a wider debate about the balance between creativity, culture, and tradition in modern fashion.
