In the midst of ongoing Israeli airstrikes, Palestinians reported receiving fresh warnings from the Israeli military to relocate from North Gaza to the southern part of the strip. The warnings included a threat that those who remained in the north could be regarded as supporters of a "terrorist organization."
These messages were delivered through leaflets bearing the name and logo of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) starting on Saturday. Additionally, mobile phone audio messages conveyed the same message throughout the Gaza Strip.
The leaflet's content read: "Urgent warning, to residents of Gaza. Your presence north of Wadi Gaza puts your life in danger. Whoever chooses not to leave north Gaza to the south of Wadi Gaza might be identified as an accomplice in a terrorist organization."
Israeli airstrikes continued throughout the night, resulting in the death of at least 55 Palestinians in Gaza. This increased the total number of casualties since October 7 to over 4,300.
Israeli authorities claim that a surprise offensive by Hamas on October 7 led to 1,400 fatalities and the taking of 212 hostages. Since then, Israel has launched airstrikes and imposed a "total siege" on Gaza. Israeli forces have also amassed troops and armor on the border with Gaza in preparation for a potential ground incursion, aiming to eliminate Hamas, which has held power in Gaza since 2007.
"We are going to go into the Gaza Strip... to destroy Hamas operatives and Hamas infrastructure," said Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi in a video message to troops, as distributed by the Israeli military on Saturday. "We will have in our mind the memories of the images and those who fell on Saturday two weeks ago."
The Israeli military stated that they had "no intention to consider those who have not evacuated... as a member of the terrorist group" and claimed not to target civilians.
The IDF stated that they urged Palestinians to move south to minimize harm to civilians. However, Palestinians have said that they were not previously informed that they might be considered "terrorist" sympathizers if they chose not to relocate. Additionally, they noted that the journey south remains perilous due to airstrikes, and some southern areas have also been hit.
According to Gaza's Health Ministry, Israel's air and missile strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 4,385 Palestinians, including hundreds of children. Moreover, more than a million of Gaza's 2.3 million residents have been displaced, with over 30 homes destroyed in the hours following an announcement from an Israeli military spokesperson that raids would be intensified.
