In a recent development, a special court in Attock has decided to extend the judicial remand of Imran Khan, the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and the party's Vice Chairman,
Shah Mahmood Qureshi, until September 26 in the ongoing cipher case. The case, centered around a classified state document, has been heard by Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain at the Attock District Jail, acting under the Official Secrets Act 2023.
This decision to prolong their remand follows approval from the Law Ministry, addressing concerns raised by the Interior Ministry regarding security. Imran Khan was initially incarcerated on August 5 after being convicted in the Toshakhana case, but on August 29, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended his sentence. Nevertheless, a special court has instructed Attock jail authorities to maintain him in "judicial lockup" in relation to the ongoing cipher case.
In a related development, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) recently reserved its verdict on a petition submitted by PTI Chairman Imran Khan, contesting the Law Ministry's choice to hold the cipher case trial at Attock jail. Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, presiding over the IHC, reserved judgment after hearing the arguments and requested an explanation from the respondents regarding the matter.
