IMF’s Georgieva asks Pakistan to tax rich, protect poor

NEW YORK: International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has urged Pakistan to “Collect more taxes from wealthy and protect poor people”.
Talking to local news channel after meeting with caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, Georgieva said, “Of course, it is difficult but Pakistan has to do it in line with IMF programme as we stand by people of Pakistan.”
Responding to question, she said it is in interest of people of Pakistan that country revitalises its economy and addresses some of “Shortcomings” of past. Later in a post on X IMF chief said she had good meeting with Pakistani premier on country’s economic prospects. “We agreed on vital need for strong policies to ensure stability, foster sustainable and inclusive growth, prioritise revenue collection and protection for most vulnerable in Pakistan,” Georgieva added. On his X handle, premier said he had constructive dialogue with Managing Director, International Monetary Fund Kristalina Georgieva, on sidelines of 78th UNGA session.
During meeting, they emphasised extending their mutual commitment towards bolstering economic stability and growth in Pakistan.
