ISLAMABAD: A nine-member delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Nathan Porter, is set to arrive in Islamabad on March 3 for a crucial economic review.
According to sources in the Ministry of Finance, the review process will continue until March 15 and will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will focus on technical aspects, while the second phase will involve policy-level discussions. The IMF delegation is also expected to provide recommendations for the 2025-26 federal budget.
Sources indicate that any potential relief for the salaried class will depend on the outcome of these negotiations. During their visit, the IMF team will engage in discussions with key government institutions, including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Energy, Planning Commission, and the State Bank of Pakistan. Talks are also scheduled with regulatory bodies such as FBR, OGRA, NEPRA, and other relevant ministries and institutions. Additionally, the delegation will hold separate negotiations with the governments of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan to discuss province-specific financial matters and economic reforms. Meanwhile, a four-member technical team that arrived earlier on Monday has already begun discussions, particularly in Punjab and Balochistan. Their findings are expected to lay the groundwork for the broader negotiations with the IMF delegation.
The visit is seen as critical for Pakistan's ongoing financial stability, as securing IMF approval remains essential for economic relief measures and future loan disbursements. The government is hopeful that successful negotiations will lead to improved fiscal policies and much-needed financial support.
