ISLAMABAD: Special parliamentary committee formed by National Assembly Speaker to probe into audio clips involving son of former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar was stopped from proceeding any further by Islamabad High Court (IHC). IHC also suspended audio leaks commission probing matter.
After hearing initial arguments, IHC restrained committee from setting up its investigation and suspended notice issued by special committee to Najam. Court also issued notices to government and other respondents for June 19 and inquired “Who records these audios”. Court has also questioned under which powers special committee took notice of audio leak. A day earlier former CJP Nisar’s son, Najam Saqib had approached High Court challenging formation of committee as illegal. Previously, couple of audio clips allegedly featuring voice of Najam Saqib appeared on April 29.
In petition filed, Najam requested court to suspend proceedings of committee and stop it from taking any punitive action. He contended that alleged audios represent breach of his privacy and his illegal surveillance.
Najam’s counsel Advocate Latif Khosa told court that they had only challenged “Speaker and Assembly’s authority to look into private matters”. “We have not challenged matter which is pending in Supreme Court,” he said.
