Hollywood’s elite are set to gather in Los Angeles for the prestigious Governors Awards, an event held annually by the Academy’s board of governors.
This year, the event will honor legendary figures in the industry, including the late Quincy Jones, James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, filmmaker Richard Curtis, and casting director Juliet Taylor. The evening also serves as an unofficial kick-off for the awards season, drawing many Oscar hopefuls. Broccoli and Wilson, who are continuing the legacy of their father, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. This honor is rarely given, and Broccoli expressed her gratitude, reflecting on the many who have contributed to the industry before them. Curtis, known for his iconic romantic comedies like Love Actually and Notting Hill, will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his extensive charitable work.
Curtis admitted that receiving an Oscar had been a childhood dream, and while he is honored, he doesn’t seek praise for his philanthropic efforts. Taylor, a veteran casting director who has worked on films like Annie Hall, Schindler’s List, and Sleepless in Seattle, will also be recognized. She expressed excitement about the honor but is particularly thrilled about the Academy’s decision to introduce a competitive Oscar for casting directors, starting in 2025. While the Governors Awards are always an emotional occasion, this year’s event is tinged with sadness due to the recent passing of Quincy Jones. A tribute to his remarkable legacy is planned for the evening.
