“Hadsa” returns: IHC reverses suspension

Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued verdict instructing revocation of suspension imposed on controversial drama series ‘Hadsa.’ This series had previously been banned by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority after it was accused by motorway rape survivor of exploiting her traumatic experience. Legal expert Reema Omar shared portion of the judgment on her Twitter account, emphasising that regulatory board had not listened to creators of drama before imposing ban. ‘Hadsa’ originated in August when journalist Fareeha Idrees shared an account of her conversation with survivor, who revealed that she had not been consulted by show’s producers before airing controversial scene and requested assistance from authorities in removing drama.
Director Wajahat Rauf responded to criticism by asserting that drama was not centered on life of motorway survivor and that screenplay aimed to raise awareness about experiences of rape survivors:
