‘Govt’s zero-tolerance policy against power theft mafia’: Minister

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Minister for Energy, Power and Petroleum Muhammad Ali reassured that interim government was implementing zero-tolerance policy against power theft mafia in country and would not spare any person who proved guilty of having connivance with electricity thieves.

Talking to private news channel, he said with strict directives IESCO had launched crackdown against electricity thieves and their facilitators in all circles, adding that we are collaborating with all related departments and law enforcement agencies on district level to ensure that process is carried out swiftly.

Crackdown will continue against elements involved in electricity theft with cooperation of relevant departments, he added.

Replying to query, he replied that because of electricity thieves and those who refuse to pay bills, others have to pay higher bills, adding that we need to stop these practices with hope that electricity prices may come down.

He said that govt focused on improving management of power-related departments, adding, that we are looking at their board of governors and will make changes in management.

To another question, he said that ministry had prepared list of officers who were involved in theft, adding that involved officers were being reshuffled and they would be removed from field jobs.

He stressed for bringing reforms into power sector on priority basis and highlighting importance of reforms in energy sector that reforms were crucial in energy sector for economic growth of country.
