KARACHI: Hafiz Naeemur Rehman amir of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan accused government of violating Rawalpindi Agreement and warned that it would face consequences for its actions.
Addressing press conference at Noor Haq Institute, he criticised high electricity costs resulting from unfavourable Independent Power Producer agreements and oppressive taxes imposed on public and traders.
He announced launch of next phase of 'Haq Do Awam' movement, which includes nationwide protests against these issues. He indicated that movement has options for long march to Islamabad and potential strike lasting one to three days.
From October 23 to 27, public referendum will also be conducted regarding non-payment of electricity bills across country. He outlined plans to show solidarity with people of Gaza and to protest against Israeli aggression.
Major events are scheduled, including public gatherings in Chitral on October 2 and Faisalabad on October 4, culminating in significant 'Gaza and Lebanon Million March' on October 6 in Karachi. On October 7, participants from all walks of life will take to streets at noon to protest against Israel.
He urged government to officially announce nationwide protest on October 7 to send clear and effective message against Israeli aggression and terrorism.
He stressed that liberation of Al-Aqsa Masjid is matter for entire Muslim community, not just single political party. He said he plans to engage with both government and opposition parties to unite on single agenda regarding Israel.
He asserted that if Muslim community, especially its leaders, were to unite, Israel would lack courage to continue its bombings in Gaza. He criticised silence and cowardice of current rulers, suggesting that it has emboldened Israel to extend its aggression into Lebanon.
He criticised Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's recent statements at United Nations regarding Kashmir and Palestine, arguing that by endorsing two-state solution, prime minister was attempting to placate US and Israel, which contradicts Pakistan's national stance.
