‘Govt set to lift undeclared ban on Madaris’

ISLAMABAD: Government decided to lift undeclared ban on madaris for opening bank accounts in addition to addressing other reservations posed by delegation of Ittehad-e-Tanzeem-ul-Madaris Pakistan (ITMP), sources said. In meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, delegation informed him about problems confronting madaris in country.
Upon hearing their concerns, premier assured cooperation in making registration process of seminaries easier and also ensured modern requirements in provision of madaris education. Sources said that government has accepted demands of delegation based on which it has agreed to amend law for registration of seminaries. Under proposed amendment, Section 21 will be added to Registration Act. As result of amendment, deputy commissioners will be able to process registration of madaris in their respective districts. PM Shehbaz also directed Ministry of Law to prepare legal draft soon, while powerful institutions have also been taken into confidence with regard to registration.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Maulana Haneef Jalandhari, Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman, Sahibzada Abdul Mustafa Hazarvi, Professor Sajid Mir, Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, Maulana Fazal Rahim Ashrafi and other scholars attended. In May 2021, Directorate General of Religious Education (DGRE) registered around 5,000 seminaries across Pakistan for which it had 16 regional offices. There were around 35,000 seminaries in country at time.
