‘Govt rejects summary to end autonomous status of NAB’

ISLAMABAD: Government rejected summary to end autonomous status of National Accountability Bureau (NAB). As per details, Ministry of Law and Justice wrote letter to NAB and rejected summary to end autonomous status Accountability watchdog. Ministry of Law also rejected suggestion to end independence of NAB Chairman.
NAB demanded government that their employment should be declared as Civil Service Occupational Group. In response to their summary, Ministry of Law stated in written letter that employment in NAB cannot be declared civil servant.
Furthermore, letter stated that if suggestion is accepted then NAB will be no more an independent institution and independence of NAB Chairman will also be culminated.
Earlier, in bid to curtail powers of National Accountability Bureau National Assembly approved amendments to National Accountability Ordinance 1999.
Law minister said that NAB law was used for political purposes to target opponents. “Previous government made many amendments through passage of ordinance and only to extend tenure of incumbent chairman NAB,” he said.
