Gov’t prioritising green investment to mitigate climate change impacts: Ahsan Iqbal

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal said that promoting green investment in Pakistan was top priority of government to tackle with growing environmental issues. He said government was taking steps to promote various sources of renewable energy including solar energy and it would discourage use of fossil fuels for electricity production.
Speaking in panel discussion at launching of ‘Friends of Greening National Investment Plans in Africa and Developing Countries Initiative’ on ‘Solutions Day’ hosted by Minister for Planning and Economic Development Egypt Dr. Hala El-Said on margins of COP27 Climate Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh he informed that government had initiated a project for production of 10,000 MW electricity through solar panels.
Government was planning to elevate 20 most backward districts of Pakistan through sustainable development. In Pakistan, it was mandatory for each project to be at par with environmental standards. He maintained that climate change issues directly affected 33 million people in Pakistan. International monetary system failed to cope with agenda of climate change. He called for establishing special fund on international level to develop infrastrucutre adapt to climate change risks. He asked developing countries to share their experiences about climate change impacts to cope with matter in a better way.
