Karachi: In rare consensus, parliamentarians belonging to opposition and treasury benches have welcomed Supreme Court’s decision to take suo motu notice of Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges’ bombshell letter accusing spy agencies of interfering in judiciary’s matter.

IHC judges-Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani, Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz wrote letter to Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), urging body to convene judicial convention over alleged interference of intelligence agencies in judicial affairs.

Letter which surfaced last week triggered crisis and Supreme Court led by CJP Isa has been under pressure to hear matter under Article 184(3) of Constitution.

Consequently, Supreme Court earlier took suo motu despite government forming one-man commission to probe matter. “Supreme Court is top court of country that has taken suo motu notice, notice will yield positive result,” Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said while speaking on floor of National Assembly.

Concurring with Asif, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan demanded apex court to include more judges to larger bench formed to hear serious allegations.

“We demand to form 12-member bench as matters like this are usually heard by 12 judges,” he added.

PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan also praised apex court suo motu notice saying: “Better late than never.” Welcoming Supreme Court’s notice, Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-Fazl MNA Noor Alam Khan urged apex court to look into “Where one-sided decisions are being made”.

“Supreme Court will have to make reforms,” he added. Pakistan Peoples’ Party lawmaker Nabil Gabol hoped that controversy surrounding matter would end after top court took suo motu notice.

“It is hoped that Supreme Court will bring truth before nation,” Gabol said while addressing NA session.
