Govt decides to limit HEC powers

ISLAMABAD: Government decided to limit authority of Higher Education Commission (HEC). Cabinet committee for legislation has given nod for amendments in HEC laws. According to proposed amendments, status of federal minister will be taken back from HEC Chairman.
Laws of HEC will be approved by Ministry of Education, while executive director of Higher Education Commission will also be appointed by government. Amendments will be presented before Cabinet for final approval, sources said. On December 4, Higher Education Commission invited innovative start-ups owned by students, alumni, faculty members, or researchers from public or private sector universities to apply for Innovator Seed Fund (ISF) Grant.
In a statement, HEC noted that Innovator Seed Fund Grant-envisioned for development of innovation and start-up ecosystem in Pakistan is flagship initiative of commission under Higher Education Development in Pakistan Project.
