Golden Jubilee Convention urges state organs to implement 1973 Constitution, protect people’s rights

ISLAMABAD: Golden Jubilee Convention of 1973 Constitution pledging to “Preserve, protect and defend” Constitution in letter and spirit, called upon state organs to take all necessary measures to ensure its full implementation and safeguard the rights and interests of people of Pakistan. Resolution presented by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and unanimously adopted by Convention held here at National Assembly Hall, emphasised importance of upholding principles of federalism as one of fundamental tenets of Constitution.

Before reading out resolution, PM paid tribute to framers of 1973 Constitution who set aside their political differences and got united for sake of country an achievement to be remembered forever.

Calling April 10, 1973 an important day in country’s history, he said despite multiple amendments made from time to time, Constitution was still living document.

Attended by parliamentarians from both Houses of Parliament, legal and constitutional experts, educationists and prominent figures from different fields of life, Convention also declared April 10, 2023, as National Constitution Day, “To be celebrated each year to commemorate adoption of Constitution of 1973 and to educate people of Pakistan about Constitution and its significance for country.”

PM said day also reminded nation as how in 1955, doctrine of necessity was invented and how chief justice of that time gave three-year extension to dictator. Similarly, he said Constitution was re-written from time to time, he added.

He said for sake of country, coalition government took up challenges and were putting in collective wisdom to steer country out of tough conditions.

Resolution said Parliament took pride in legacy and history of drafting and adopting Constitution of 1973 that enshrined federalism, trichotomy of powers and independence of judiciary, provincial autonomy and fundamental rights for citizens.
