Rawalpindi: Eleventh anniversary of Gayari tragedy observed to pay homage to those who embraced martyrdom in deadly avalanche near Siachen Glacier region.
Siachen is in Kashmir. No-man’s-land is 20,000 feet above sea level. Military experts say inhospitable climate and avalanche-prone terrain have claimed more lives than gunfire. On April 7, 2012, massive ice avalanche struck Pakistani military headquarters at Gayari, 30 km west of Siachen Glacier terminus, near Siachen glacier region. Area located in deep valley at 3,775 metres above sea level, Gayari base is one of most important Pakistani bases in area.
