Karachi: Commissioner Karachi should take legal action against wholesalers, dairy farmers and retailers on selling fresh milk to consumers at arbitrary rates. Rate of fresh milk fixed by government is Rs 180 oper litre while consumer is being charged extra Rs 30 per litre. Kaukab Iqbal Chairman of Consumers Association of Pakistan talking to media representatives said that 70,000 litres of fresh milk is sold in Karachi every day, which means that 210 million litres milk is sold in Karachi every month. Increase of Rs 30 is putting burden of Rs 6.3 billion on consumers. He said Sindh Food Authority's job is to check quality of fresh milk, but Authority's performance is zero.
Some fresh milk sellers are also cheating in measurement. Instead of litre, they give milk in seer and receive money per litre.
Kaukab Iqbal demanded Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to immediately form an inquiry committee on arbitrary increase in prices of fresh milk and find out who is pocketing Rs 6.3 billion.
Punjab Food Authority periodically checks rates of open milk and if milk is adulterated or substandard, it is dumped into drains. But contrary, especially in Karachi and Sindh, such action is not seen.
