ISLAMABAD: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) issued statement saying it was in process of “verifying veracity” of claims that Islamic State Khorasan Province (IS-KP) had accepted responsibility for attacking Pakistan Embassy in Kabul.
Pakistani security guard was wounded on Friday by shots fired at Pakistan Embassy in Afghan capital in what Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called “Assassination attempt” on head of mission Ubaidur Rehman Nizamani. A Kabul police spokesman had said one suspect had been arrested and two light weapons were seized after security forces swept nearby building “Prevented continuation of gunfire”. An Embassy official told AFP lone attacker “Came behind cover of houses and started firing”. “Ambassador and all other staff are safe, but we are not going outside of Embassy building as precaution,” he had said.
Foreign Minister of Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi had condemned attack yesterday. Meanwhile, Afghan local media while quoting diplomatic sources had claimed that police raided an eight-storey building near Pakistan Embassy in Kabul and took person into custody. Arrested accused, whose identity has not been disclosed tried to flee by jumping using rope after seeing police.
However, attempt was foiled. It was reported that accused planted landmines in three rooms of building. Apart from one long-range rifle, 47 rifles, sniper and other arms and ammunition were recovered from accused. Suspect was shifted to an unknown location for investigation.
