Karachi: First tent city in coordination with Malir Development Authority (MDA) and Malir District Administration is going to be established for flood affected in Karachi. Malir Deputy Commissioner Irfan Salam Mirwani said tent city is to be set up in Sector-18 of MDA New Malir Scheme-1 near National Highway.

He said government first priority is to gather internally displaced persons at one place to ensure provision of basic facilities in easier manner.

Mirwani said district administration has taken an initiative for making arrangements for flood victims on MDA land. “Initially 15,000 flood victims are going to shift in tent city, where over 2,000 tents are going to be installed.” He said district administration will initially transfer flood victims from 39 different places into tent city with a week.

“Currently, flood victims are living in make-shift camps in different government schools and medical center buildings in Malir District,” Mirwani added. Arrangements for supplying daily meal, water and other facilities to flood victims, shift hospitals and medicines would also be available in tent city. Schools for flood affected children and setup of ‘dastarkhawun’ would also be arranged in tent city. He assured that all flood victims would return to their native towns after improving floodwater condition in their areas.

MDA Director General Muhammad Sohail said Malir district administration has requested authority for providing location of setting up tent city for flood victims on temporary basis. Malir Deputy Commissioner and MDA project director will supervise necessary arrangements to facilitate affectees with coordination of district administration. Moreover, proper inventory of victims will be maintained with name and CNIC number to keep record straight.

This permission is issued only for a period of “one month”, adding it may also be ensured that “no” right is claimed by anyone at any stage over a space provided in Sector-18, as New Malir Housing Scheme -1, title rests with MDA.
