Fire in Karachi Express kills seven

KARACHI: At least seven people including three children died after fire broke out in bogie of Karachi Express train near Sindh’s Khairpur. Authorities received information of fire in business-class coach on train shortly after midnight as it travelled from Karachi to Lahore.
Train was then immediately stopped near Tando Masti Khan station and an emergency was reported to fire brigade. First fire-fighting vehicles reached spot at around 1:50am and after struggle of about 40 minutes, fire was brought under control.
Fire claimed lives of seven passengers while four others remain unaccounted for. One of passengers, 70-year-old Rabia Bibi succumbed to her injuries after jumping from burning coach. Authorities later separated affected coach and train resumed its journey around 7:30am.
DS Sukkur, DCO Sukkur and other railway officers were present at spot to supervise rescue efforts and report to Ministry. Taking strict notice of incident, an investigation was ordered by Ministry.
In this regard, team under leadership of federal government inspector of railways has left for scene of incident and media will also be informed as soon as investigation is completed.
