Financial misappropriation revealed in construction of jogging track

ISLAMABAD: Serious financial irregularities have been revealed in the project of construction of jogging track in Ankara Park Islamabad. Chairman CDA Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Randhawa ordered an inquiry into this financial scandal after the irregularities surfaced.

On the direction a two member fact-finding inquiry committee has been established headed by Deputy DG Environment Rana Tahir Hasan Khan. The Accounts Officer Mazharul Haq is the member cum secretary. Sources revealed that Divisional Audit Officer Mehrban Khan is accused of being involved in this scam. The construction work costing around Rs. 1.5 billion was awarded to Turab Construction Company in open tender. Later, the new firm was registered with the Pakistan Engineering Council by adding the additional word Turab Constructions. The agreement was made in the name of the new company. The sources said that so far Rs8.4 million has been issued so far against the project.

The first company has alleged that the new company was registered in the name of Divisional Audit Officer Mehrban Khan’s brother and funds were paid to him. The committee will inspect on the spot how much work has been done and it will also scrutinize the record. The background of the work award should be ascertained.  It should be checked whether there was any irregularity in the work done by Turab Construction Company or not, the sources said. The committee will inquire into the allegation of Muhammad Irfan Turab that the payment of Rs. 8.4 millions was issued. Chairman CDA has ordered to complete the inquiry in three days but the concerned staff is working diligently to provide the complete records to the inquiry committee so that the facts cannot come out.
