ECP summons emergency meeting on Punjab, KP elections

ISLAMABAD: In connection with President Dr Alvi’s announcement over holding elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Election Commission of Pakistan summoned an emergency meeting today.
Meeting will review dates announced by President for holding elections in both provinces. As per ECP spokesperson, electoral watchdog will take any decision as per law, after receiving President’s letter.
Earlier, in decision under Section 57 (1) of Elections Act 2017, President asked Election Commission of Pakistan to issue election programme in accordance with Section 57 (2) of Act.
President Alvi said governors of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were not performing their constitutional duties for appointing date, not later than 90 days from date of dissolution of provincial assemblies as per Constitution of Pakistan.
He added that ECP was also not fulfilling its constitutional obligation of holding polls for assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
