ECP proposes dates for elections in Punjab, KP

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) proposed dates for elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Election Commission has written letter to Governor of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on matter of elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In letter it was said that Punjab Assembly was dissolved on January 14. In case of dissolution of Assembly, Election Commission is bound to hold elections within 90 days.
According to text of letter, it is constitutional authority of Governor to announce date of elections under Article 105, but consultation with Election Commission is necessary for date of elections.
Letter said that elections in Punjab must be held before April 13, dates for elections in Punjab are from April 9 to 13. Governor Punjab should announce date in between April 09 to 13 for election.
Election Commission said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly was dissolved on January 18. Date for elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is proposed to be April 15 to 17.
Letter further said that Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa should announce election date from April 15 to 17. Election Commission will conduct Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly elections in April, while Punjab and KP assembly elections will increase expenses by more than Rs 15 billion.
Sources said, “If Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab elections are held before general elections, expenses will increase by Rs 20 billion.”
