ECP meets today to decide on Karachi LG polls

KARACHI: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will take up case pertaining to Local Government (LG) elections in Karachi and Hyderabad today (Wednesday). Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab will appear before ECP on behalf of provincial government. Karachi administrator will brief electoral body regarding law and order situation in city.
Nisar Khuhro will represent Pakistan Peoples’ Party while former law minister Farogh Naseem and Waseem Akhtar would appear before EP as MQM-P representatives. Meeting will be chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. In its written response, provincial government earlier stated LG elections are not possible due to unavailability of required police force in Sindh. It was also pointed out that additional police personnel have been sent to Islamabad at interior ministry’s request.
ECP had postponed LG elections in Karachi scheduled for October 23. It was third time ECP had postponed second phase of LG polls in Sindh.
